Privacy Policy — Orbix
Octopuxx Labs ("we") respects the privacy of Orbix users ("the app"). This policy describes what data the app processes and how. Orbix is distributed in two versions: the one downloaded from our website and the one on the Mac App Store. Where they differ, this policy says so
1. Summary
Orbix contains no analytics, advertising, tracking or crash-reporting tools. Your lists, items and preferences stay on your Mac. The app connects to the internet only to show the icons of web links (§3), and, in the version downloaded from our website, to check for updates (§4) and to manage licenses through Freemius (§5)
2. Data stored on your Mac
The following information stays on the device and is never sent to us:
- App lists, links and icons configured in the launcher
- Preferences (theme, hot corner, shortcuts, layout, interface language and, in the website version, the automatic update check setting) stored via macOS
UserDefaults - Backups and exports created on user request, saved as local files in a location chosen by the user
- Website version only: the start date of the free trial, and the license key and activation details once a license is activated
Backups the user chooses to save to a personal cloud service (e.g. iCloud Drive) are handled by that service, which is not operated by or accessible to Octopuxx Labs
3. Icons of web links
To show the icon of a web link added to the launcher, the app requests it from Google's favicon service (google.com/s2/favicons) or, as a fallback, from the website itself (/favicon.ico)
- Only the domain name (e.g.
github.com) is sent, along with what any web request normally carries, such as the IP address - Retrieved images are stored in a local cache (in
Application Support/Orbix/favicons) to reduce future requests
4. Updates (website version)
The app checks for updates by downloading a small file from www.octopuxxlabs.com, automatically about once a week (this can be turned off in the app's menu) or when the user asks. If a new version exists and the user accepts, the app downloads it from the same website, verifies its signature and installs it
Like any web request, this check reveals the IP address and the app's version to our hosting provider. The app does not send any profile of the Mac. We do not use this information to identify users. The Mac App Store version is updated by the App Store and does not make this check
5. Licenses and purchases
- Website version: Orbix is sold and its licenses are managed through Freemius, Inc., which acts as reseller and payment processor. Payment details are entered on Freemius's checkout and processed by Freemius and its payment providers. We never receive card data. Freemius shares with us the buyer's name, email address and order details, which we use only to manage the license and provide support
- Free trial (website version): the 7-day trial is tracked on the Mac. Nothing is sent to start it
- Activation and validation (website version): when a license is activated, the app sends Freemius the license key, the name and email address entered in the activation window, a device identifier derived from the Mac's hardware ID through a one-way hash (or, if that ID cannot be read, a random value saved on the Mac), and the Mac's name as set in System Settings. Periodically afterwards, to check that the license is still valid, and when it is deactivated, the app sends the license key, the device identifier and the activation ID assigned by Freemius
- Mac App Store version: the 7-day free trial and the purchase of Orbix Full are in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple under its own terms. The start of the trial is the date of the transaction signed by Apple. The app has no other license system and sends nothing to Freemius
Use of Freemius is also subject to Freemius's own privacy policy
6. Sharing with third parties
Orbix shares data only with the technical providers strictly necessary to deliver its features:
- Google: icons of web links (§3)
- Cloudflare, Inc.: hosting of our website, including the update check (§4)
- Freemius, Inc.: licenses and payments for the website version (§5)
- Apple Inc.: Mac App Store version (§5)
No data is sold or shared for advertising purposes
7. Data retention
- Data on the Mac: stays on the device until the user deletes it or uninstalls the app
- License and purchase data (Freemius): kept by Freemius for as long as needed to manage the license and to meet legal and tax obligations
- Technical records of web requests: kept by our hosting provider for a limited time, according to its own policies
8. User rights (GDPR)
If you are a resident of the European Union or European Economic Area, you have the right to: access your data, request rectification or erasure, request portability, object to processing or request its restriction, and lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority (in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali)
To exercise these rights, including erasure of your license and purchase data, write to support@octopuxxlabs.com. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law
9. Security
All network connections use HTTPS. Orbix does not ask for or store passwords
10. Changes to this policy
Any future changes will be published on this page with an updated date
